Rel=”noopener noreferrer”

Two attributes applied to hyperlinks on your pages that improve your site’s security. It’s typically used in conjunction with the _blank command, which tells the browser to open the link in a new window.

  • The “noopener” attribute tells the browser to open a new window while restarting the window.opener Javascript process, which means that it won’t pass information about the original window to the new window that opens up.
  • The “noreferrer” attribute operates similarly but specifically prevents referrer information from being passed to the new window.

While some SEOs are wary of using rel=”noopener noreferrer” thinking it will negatively impact SEO, there’s no proven effect on SEO as there is with rel=”nofollow”.
